I would like a novel from Mary Robinette Kowal's "Midnight Hour" story please, it was AMAZING. I wanted "Ghost Champagne" by Charlie Jane Anders to be longer, and I recommend "Cat Call" to my friends Alisa and Julia for their Year's Best YA Speculative Fiction - hard-hitting and far too true.

What a uniquely delightful magazine. I loved the broad range of genres, characters, settings, and so on. Many of the stories had LGBTQ representation, which I hadn't been expected and was really pleasantly surprised by. It's not the sort of thing I encounter often in SF/F. There was only one piece in the magazine (a nonfiction essay) that I didn't really enjoy and thought was rather dull, but everything else was just excellent.

This is exactly why I don't like short stories, they frustrate me because there isn't enough info.

What a great story! So emotional, heartfelt and clever. I loved the play on the tropes. It is a short story but I was otterly invested in the story.

Merged review:

I have a really hard time caring about ghost stories. This is a bit to close to literary fiction for my taste. It's well written and smart though.

She stayed away from him during the day, because he loved her. That manifested in predictable ways, without regard for who was in the room with them.

I really, really liked this and I can certainly see why it has been nominated for the #BooktubeSFF Awards this year. It's a truly wonderful short story with some really great moments between a mad king and his nameless queen. As the story unfolds you discover why the King and Queen are both mad and nameless, but as a whole I felt this just worked. It was whimsical, fun and full of great ideas and moments which made me happy and smile.
As always with Kowal her short fiction continually makes me want more becuase I could see a longer version of this working seriously well, but I think it's just great that she always makes me want more of her writing! 4.5*s overall and highly recommended (especially as it's free online at Uncanny mangazine)

This was quite good, but nothing outstanding for me. I really liked the premise and both the queen and the king were great characters, and while I did thoroughly enjoy the story/plot, it should have been longer... Even if had been 50 pages total (which is still quite short), it would have been better. My biggest problems with it was the length, specifically I would have liked more detail, especially with the curse. But also, the story would jump in time by hours or even a day, and there is no indication of that. I had to reread a few paragraphs to get the flow of the story once I realized what was happeneing was after a considerable amount of time passed, and this happened at least 2 or 3 times that I remember.

I also would like some kind of continuation, but the ending is also fine the way it is.
