Umm… it was not for me. If you want to listen to something quick it’s a good way to pass time.

*listening to more free short horror audiobooks from the “Come Join Us By The Fire” anthology while on the road with my mom. Pleasantly surprised by the production of these with excellent narrators and background noises

It's like the Pied Piper, but with an even more horrifying twist. It reads like Mother Nature (or one of her creatures) taking a little bit of revenge for all the garbage and pollution filling the sea. There were some interesting twists and elements to this tale, which is impressive, given how truly short it is.

The legacy of the thing is grim for sure, but there's very little substance to the story. The thing also felt a bit too comical (syn?) in the beginning - maybe that was to create contrast, but it didn't work for me.

Listened to this one in the car. Areg and I weren't too impressed. The language is sparse, stripped of most adjectives, the story is short, there isn't much mounting sense of dread, and the conclusion just kind of...exists. Meh.

Plot:
A bundle of seaweed that's actually a monster comes ashore and,
SpoilerPied Piper-like, calls almost all the townspeople into the water to drown. Lansdale tells us that the only people left are the deaf, the babies, and people in comas. Subsequently, the babies and people in comas die where they are and the deaf leave. Why don't the deaf try to save the others, or call people to the town to help them? Totally unaddressed obviousity. Sigh.

It's literally the pied piper. It's 6 minutes, it's barely a spoiler.

Another great story in this anthology. A re imagining of the pied piper of hamelin with a lot of lovecraftian elements thrown in. Lansdale manages to marry a bonkers plot, folklore, jazz and the concept of a 'dead city' to humorous and sometimes bizarre and disquieting effect. The mood and atmosphere are top notch and the writing flows like butter. Well worth a read though it does have some bizarre elements.
