You can do nothing but marvel at the way Harrison strips herself down and reveals the unspeakable. The forbidden. It is a book of remarkable bravery and of tragic loss.

I read this book 2.5 years ago and I somehow already forgot how good it was. It might be the best memoir I’ve ever read. As Mary Karr says on the back of my copy, “I couldn’t stop reading this. I’ll never stop remembering it.”

I don't really know how I feel about it.

Kathryn Harrison's writing is like a player boyfriend whose moves are so smooth you don't release you've been enamored with him until he leaves. I couldn't put this book down. Legitimately. And then when I did I was shocked by what I had read. The content of course is horrific, but not graphic. In fact the most probing parts have nothing to do with the author's incestuous relationship with her father.

Dark and deep. I weep for her because I know it's nonfiction. It must be so scary and heartbreaking to know that one that hurt you so deeply is still out there. I hope the ending is forever true for her and that she has found peace and happiness at last.

A short but moving book, this poetically written story covers incest, eating disorders and the messed up nature of life in general from the perspective of a woman who has really been through the mill.

Harrison covers the very dark subject matter in an emotive and understanding way and without creating a book that is difficult to read. The poetic nature of her prose prevents the book feeling heavy and evokes feelings in the reader that enable a connection between them and the main protagonist. I found myself completely understanding of the situations in which she finds herself, seeing clearly how she was being manipulated and also how easy it was to manipulate her.

My favourite thing about this book was the way it was written; I love poetry and so it really appealed to that side of me.
