The Kiss by Kathryn Harrison

5.0

A short but moving book, this poetically written story covers incest, eating disorders and the messed up nature of life in general from the perspective of a woman who has really been through the mill.

Harrison covers the very dark subject matter in an emotive and understanding way and without creating a book that is difficult to read. The poetic nature of her prose prevents the book feeling heavy and evokes feelings in the reader that enable a connection between them and the main protagonist. I found myself completely understanding of the situations in which she finds herself, seeing clearly how she was being manipulated and also how easy it was to manipulate her.

My favourite thing about this book was the way it was written; I love poetry and so it really appealed to that side of me.
