Once again I loved Daphne du Maurier's writing. It is descriptive and smart and shows so much insight into the human psyche.
The story in this book was just a tad too depressing for me. I just wish someone in this book would have had some sort of happy ending. Ever character ends up alone, crazy or dead. I was very immersed in the story and characters however, and kept reading on without losing interest. Hal was my favourite, and his part of the saga touched me most. This part of the book I could not put down. I was really invested in the story and had to blink away tears at one point. That makes any book great for me, hence the four stars.
Not Daphne's best work but I would recommend this to anyone who loves historical fiction and knows some of the authors other works.

Sigh. Not your typical Daphne du Maurier, by any means. Certainly a pertinent read for the times, as DDM vividly recounts the blind inequity between 19th century wealthy landholders and later corporate owners of a copper mine, and the local villagers they magnanimously hired (exploited) and kept in poverty and squalid conditions. One is treated to five generations of dissolute, ineffectual men who are the product of too much money, too much local power, and who marry (with one exception) the most irritating, manipulative women you would ever want to encounter (though we have all met them in the 20th/21st century). It is a scouring expose of the ruin brought to society by the 1%, and since we are seeing it today and nothing has changed, it was just plain depressing. I'm so glad to be done with it.

Hungry Hill jumped to the top of my queue bc my a Grammie had just read it and I like to talk books with her! Another Daphne du Maurier joint & it’s an epic family saga.

The fam are Irish landowners /castle dwelling rich folks in the 1800’s.. the storyline takes us through five generations up to the 1920’s.

I already wrote a very long email half way through about my thoughts on each character… a generational story combined with the historic is a great way to get in the head of each character.
