This is my second C.J. Box novel, as well as second Joe Pickett novel. And for the second time, I was disappointed.
I don't find these stores thrilling, clever, or interesting in any way. In this book, there was just a group of hoodlums being hoodlums in the woods. That's it. That was the book. Oh, of course there's the occasional side plot interspersed throughout the book of some other character and some falcons, like it's the author's desperate attempt to distract from the boring main "plot". Unfortunately, boring plus boring is still boring.

This series has had its ups and downs but this book had an interesting concept and I felt it was written better than others in the series.

Had a good start and weak last half-1/3 of book, imo. I like Joe though. The writing wasn’t my cup of tea.

Lately I've read several books that were the most recent in their respective series to get to my local library, and I've noticed a trend: they've each gotten darker, and depending on the genre, less realistic/less based on the rules and conventions of their settings established earlier in the series. The authors seem to get tired of their own characters, and start writing more superficial stereotypes.
In this case, the series has steadily been devolving into unlikely plots and unlikeable characters, being resolved by Nate as deus ex machina, and the endings have more gore, more violence. Not my thing. Your mileage may vary.
