A little too long for the storyline. The ending also seems like a cop-out. Few cool Bat-family moments though.

What even is happening?! I feel like this is the climax of something that was built up for a while...I feel like I'm totally missing some good information but at the same time it's pretty readable. The art is very nicely done, it's always a pleasure to see the Bat Fam. work together on missions, and they turned Nightwing into the coolest gargoyle monster I've ever seen. (It even has bird and bat like qualities) I've never really known batman to be a monster hunter though so this is kinda a strange but interesting idea. I think it's cool for a occasional thing (since it looks like this will be something the Bat Fam will be investigating) but hopefully this won't be the norm in the new batman comics. ~Ashely

I've been out of the loop for a bit so here is the things I'm missing out on... [Tim is dead! Noooo! Also Clayface is now working with Batman, which I think is very interesting. I wish I knew how this happened. I'm not sure who Orphan is, I have no idea who Gotham Girl is, There was a couple of other characters in the background of the bat cave that I might know who they are? Anyway, I'll have to get back up to speed that's for sure! These questions didn't prevent me from enjoying the book though! (hide spoiler)]

Un evento metido con calzador en la nueva etapa de Batman guionizada por Tom King y que no es imprescindible leer para seguir los eventos de la serie principal de batman.

A mish mash of wackiness.
Didn’t really hold together as a story, and was just goofy.

A fun event that transitions very smoothly from the ongoing titles, preserves the integrity of the character dynamics within those runs even as it melds them together, and manages a cohesive tone and voice throughout, which is something DC has had a problem with in past events.

This time they wisely allowed a single writer to do the heavy lifting for all the titles across the books in consultation with each book's normal author, rather than the disjointed approach they had in the past by reversing that. And even as the artists shift between issues the look and feel of the volume stays remarkably consistent and cohesive.

It's a fluffy (but fun) monster story with some killer designs, nice character moments as the players reflect on what's come before, and a competent setup for what comes next for each.

SPOILERS

yeah… it’s not that good. in the ocean that is Batman comics, it will not stand out. it will not stand the test of time. that being said, i didn’t hate it. it was simply inoffensive. i began reading this only because i started tom king’s run of batman, and upon finishing the i am gotham storyline in the deluxe rebirth edition, i was presented with the night of the monster men. and you kind of have to read it unfortunately. hugo strange’s presence was set up in the pages of batman rebirth, but if you skipped these two batman issues (7 & 8, the only issues of night of the monster men that is collected in the deluxe rebirth edition of batman), you won’t get a satisfactory conclusion to “the monster men are coming”, the saying several patients of hugo strange state before suiciding themselves in fashionable ways, set up and said multiple times in the i am gotham story line.

and the story itself isn’t gratifying or satisfactory at all. the short end of it is that hugo strange traded psycho pirate for some programmable venom and used some cadavers to turn into monsters (4 in total) all in an effort to teach batman why he isn’t the batman that gotham needs, that it’s actually HIM, HUGO STRANGE, who is that perfect batman, and who’ll save gotham.

anyways, first monster is a giant baby with a huge sphere head that goes down pretty quickly - the child. then this hugh brontosaurus looking monster appears that keeps sprouting new heads on its neck and batwoman and batman spend the next 3 or 4 issues fighting it. after nightwing does some investigating at the morgue, the former blackgate prisoner turned kobra cult member, also guy who shot down the plane in issue 1 of batman rebirth (see it all connects so you gotta read it!) now an undead monster that shoots tiny monsters out of its giant sack on its back heads to blackgate and nightwong runs off to stop it and gotham girl comes to help and loses her cool, still under the effects of the psycho pirate. the last monster, spoiler and orphan had actually been fighting the whole time under the guise of it being some one-minded mold that spread everywhere and made all the gotham city-zens (they had to be evacuated because of a pretty dangerous storm, THEN all the monsters started appearing) angry at each other and after being kicked out of the cave, the monster heads off to the city, i forget why. the next issue batman says it’s heading towards nightwing and spoiler because it considers them threats but that’s after it already left. quick side note, all the designs of the monsters are pretty banging and were definitely the most enjoyable part of this story for me.

there’s some stuff i’m leaving out like nightwing and gotham girl being turned into monsters for an issue or two but it all gets resolved pretty quickly, as duke thomas and alfred had been examining the cells, very slowly mind you, as they keep stating that tim drake could’ve done it faster but tim drake died in the last detective comics issue so uh-oh :/, and they concocted an anti-venom solution and that’s that. then all the monsters that have been defeated combine into a huge mega monster and i thought i was going to see some pacific rim shit, but the bat family just take residence in some skyscrapers with huge guns to combat it.

ok ok let me continue. so hugo strange did all this to diagnose the batman. the child. grief. fear. manipulation. and finally the ego. all this to say, “batman, you’re unfit for this. you can’t handle this. I CAN.” and for a little, in part 5 of this crossover, i was excited. the last page ends in a full-page spread of hugo strange in a batsuit and i thought the last part was going to be a clash of ideals or something or maybe a cool fight! nope. the suit does represent hugo strange wanting to usurp batman’s throne of gotham’s greatest protector, but it’s also a suicide suit which means if batman so much as touches strange, strange will blow up and batman doesn’t kill and starve knows that and will take advantage of that blah blah blah. strange gives his diagnosis, we all know it’s wrong , and batman utilizes clayface to clog all the vents in the building to get rid of all the oxygen in the room, so strange loses consciousness, and batman doesn’t because he’s so cool and can go longer without oxygen. 😎

all in all, an average story, but in a sea of average stories, it makes it all that much worse.

the art by rossmo in the batman issues, i’ve seen people praise or say that it’s better than finch. i’m not that big of a fan of finch’s artwork , but apart from the monsters and batwoman, i do not like rossmo’s either. duke and alfred look horrid and batman was given a shoddy face too, and everyone’s head is so square and i was not enjoying it. also, the dialogue is bad. i will not elaborate further. i think i wrote enough. not a recommend from me, but read it if you want, it’s only six issues.
