Charming and whimsical, just as all the reviews have said. I loved the delightful fantasy academia vibes and the lovely characters.

This book was enchanting. I loved Wendell Bambleby's drama queen nature and I love that there was a bit of queer representation. Maybe I'll add more to this review but right now I'm in a bit of a book hangover phase so... I'm gonna go and recommend this book to everyone I know.

A very sweet and easy read with wonderfully magical descriptions of landscape that transports you to another place.

Emily Wilde is an academic studying Faeries and we join her on her final adventure before she wishes to publish her findings in an encyclopaedia. However, her peaceful research trip is rudely interrupted by her colleague Wendell, who has decided to travel to assist her without her permission. Wendell is the calm and sunshine to her gloomy clouds, and this immediately irritates Emily as he befriends the townfolk and turns her experience on its head with his charm (she has not managed to make a good impression thus far). "If you do not admit kindness from others, you cannot be surprised when they fail to offer any."

During the course of the research trip Emily finds herself in situations she wouldn't normally put herself. She assists townfolk after townfolk with issues resulting from the illusive Faerie that live near their town. Wendell, of course, is very helpful in these situations due to his total opposite personality to Emily's, and maybe something else?! She's just not sure she believes it yet. Emily starts to realise she is grateful for his company and assistance, "...perhaps it is always restful to be around someone who does not expect anything from you beyond what is in your nature." And they work well together putting together the stories they have gathered.

Eventually things turn and Emily not only finds the illusive Faerie, but finds herself trapped amongst them. The enchantments from the king are strong and confusing. Emily has found herself in a situation that she alone cannot save herself from. "I always felt worse in the king's presence... I was like a small planet that, when it drifted too near a massive star, began to tear itself apart."

Will she allow her new and old friends to come to her rescue?
