What a great memoir! Lara is a suburban mom with a masters degree, four sons and her own business. She is also a heroin addict who is fueling her addiction by stealing her neighbors’s credit cards. It doesn’t take long before Lara is caught, convicted of 32 felonies and sentenced to jail.

Lara tells us of her time in jail and then her struggles to reacclimate to society once she is released. She is on parole, has no money and is filled with the shame of her actions. When a literary agent takes a chance on her, Lara’s life finally turns around and she becomes a successful ghostwriter. Despite her success, Lara still struggles to feel worthy.

This book would have been a great fiction novel so it’s even wilder that it’s true. The writing was amazing and I didn’t want to put it down. As I read the book, I also realized that Lara co-wrote one of my favorite books of the year, The Sun Does Shine. Her story shows us that we are more than the worst thing we’ve ever done. I highly recommend this book!
