Great book. Wish the dialogue of the black characters weren't so blatantly stereotypical. It sounded like they wanted the black characters to sound like they were from the 70's and 80's. There was an overuse of slang language to sound "hip" and "relevant" and to make sure the readers knew the characters were black. As if all black people speak like that. It was off putting.

This was another disappointing read for the year. While the premise was interesting, the execution could have been better. I think the shortness of the story worked against it since the characters were always on the move with little time to reflect over what happened. I did enjoy the connection between the two main characters and I could excuse some of their poor decisions during the story. But I think there should have been some major event that caused Atlanta to experience the upheaval and riots.
We're told in the beginning that the two football teams were at odds because one team wore blackface before the story and the members faced no consequences. But what caused the larger riot? The book never makes it clear.

I did like the ending and the ambiguity over the future of Campbell and Lena's connection. I just wish the exploration of heavy themes like white privilege, class, racism, police brutality, etc was a bit more complex.

A very good listen! Coming of age in a town where there are racial tensions that explodes into a full blown riot is not the easiest plot to write for a YA audience. A lesser skilled author runs the risk of either under developing the themes or overwhelming the TA. But these authors pulled it off like it was nothing.

I’m still not sure if the intention was to write a full length novel or a novella because it read like the latter.

The narrators did great too. Lena sounded like the girl I imagine Tiffany Haddish would have sounded like at her age. Campbell was sweet and adorable even if her naivety and ignorance was a bit irksome sometimes.

I particularly loved the way their budding friendship used as a medium to discuss the issues of interracial co-existence and friendships.

In summary, it was a short, sweet read. I 100% recommended.
