This book was entirely not what I expected. When Thomas' grandmother dies and bequeaths him a box he doesn't quite know what to make of it. A secret garden his grandmother cultivated exists inside the box. 6 other gardens exist but someone is killing the owners off one by one.

I really enjoyed the concept of this book. Secret gardens only you control and shape with your thoughts? Yes please. I could have read about the gardens alone for 300 pages but instead there is a who done it that jumps through space and time and the gardens.

I loved how the book was broken down into parts each called a different name to match the gardens. I enjoyed hearing why each of the characters had shaped their gardens in a specific way. I could have easily have imagined this to be a series of three or seven books covering the history and changes of the garden.

Definitely not something to be lumped in with paranormal romance. It is a good paranormal mystery with beautiful gardens to go with it.

This is one of the best paced books I have read in a long time; the author provided snippets of information gradually, at a realistic pace, without it becoming slow or cumbersome. The snippets held my interest and kept me guessing, and I was in no rush to get to the answers, for every part of the book was so full and vibrant. I wanted to experience every part of it, rather than just see where it ended up. The characters all felt like they had extra layers beyond what was provided within the book. The world felt nearly tangible, as if the book, like the boxes in the book, could open up and let me into a new form of existence. And the language was brilliant, poetical. Definitely worth a read.

Great piece of teenage/ YA fiction - all my favourite elements were here: Victorian London, Magic, Horror elements, a young plucky protagonist. Some of the descriptions would be a bit too grotesque for me to read back when I was 13-14, but I was a bit skittish as a child, so if you're a bit more robust, it's all good.

Honestly a solid 3 stars

There are some movements in the writing that are solid poetry, but there's a lot of the book that's just characters explaining things/telling stories to the main character. There's a weird abstraction that makes you feel like the main character isn't really there; I couldn't even remember his name until the book's climax

The world is really cool, I just wish we could explore the gardens a bit more than we do
