This is very dark but this was very good. I wasn’t sure how it was going to be reworked but it worked. The flash backs for context, the whole universe, the magic is a little confusing but they were able to work it out in the end. I’m looking forward to reading the next series.

Slowest of slow burns and lots of tension and unclear motivation, which is entirely intentional. Both main characters also show a lack of agency, which is, again, intentional. It may drive some people mad and feel weak, though the puzzle pieces are there if you know what to look for. While the beginning throws a lot of world building at the reader — and some is a little sloppy — the unanswered questions kept me going. I do think this could be a duology instead of a trilogy to keep the pace moving faster, though (knowing some of what’s coming).
