This book wasn't terrible, it just wasn't great either. I feel that the synesthesia didn't really play into the story well, only to give a sense of betrayal and familial heartbreak towards the end. That just didn't seem like enough. There wasn't much romance, but in the romance that was there, it felt trope-y. Girl meets boy. Girl can't see boy's aura. Boy brings devastating news about the girl's past. Bum bum; they knew each other. Story ends and they are in love now.
All of that negative aside I did like reading this book, it just won't be a reread of listen againa.

This book felt very predictable to me, and the characters were quite one dimensional. It’s definitely a YA book, and definitely not to my tastes.

Honestly, I was really not into this book...at first. It ended up getting me at the end. The majority of the book was mediocre and the characters relatively bland. The book is written between Ella & Alec's perspective, which is something that I enjoyed. The suspense kept me reading and the ending is what brought on my rating.

I listened to the audiobook of this & it was surprisingly good.
I enjoyed the narrator, she did a great job of giving each character a personality and bringing them to life.
Ella seemed naive for a good portion of the book, but she didn't have any reason to be suspicious till Alec came into her life. The supporting characters were entertaining and the story was easy to get into and about 3/4 of the way through is when I got hooked and wanted to finish it.
It's an enjoyable, light read (or listen, in this case

The Color of Lies is a mystery/thriller with a synesthesia twist! Ella has spent her whole life being able to “read” the people around her. When she talks to people, she doesn’t only hear their words, she sees them. She experiences the world as a rainbow—and the colors tell her much more than mere words ever could: she can sense emotions, suss out lies and understand hidden meaning much better than the average person can. But when she realizes that her whole life might have been built on a lie, she’s shaken to her core. She discovers that her parents’ deaths when she was three may not have been accidental. That revelation alone could be enough to break her, but as the truth unravels, she finds that the reality might be far more painful than she imagined.

This thriller kept me guessing. I had some ideas about what might be happening, but I was never quite sure, and there were quite a few surprises. I did have to suspend disbelief on a few details in the end, but I definitely enjoyed the journey!! I recommend this one if you’re a fan of YA mystery/thrillers or want to read a book through the eyes of someone who experiences the world differently than the average person.

***Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review (but then ended up listening to the audiobook from the library). No other compensation was given and all opinions are my own.***

A slow first half and a rocket of a second half but overall a decent story. It was obvious that Alec was a good guy so I wish the investigation part of the story started more quickly. While I found the identity of the killer obvious (there was a clue in an early chapter), I definitely did not predict the reason. Decent story even if it was a little too YA for my typical tastes. Also, Max was such an annoying character lol

When Alec is going to meet Ella's family for the first time, she explicitly says not to use the word "sugar" and he does and Joe doesn't respond and I clocked that and thought it was weird.

I am a fan of this author's. My first introduction to Mrs. Lyons was to her medical thriller series, Angels of Mercy. Which I enjoyed that series. This newest book from this author was one that sounded interesting and one that I had to check out.

I did like this book. Although, I will say that I do feel like it is a book that may be enjoyed by the younger adult audience. Not to say that I was not a fan of this book but I just felt like the characters were in that borderline area of teen to almost an adult.

Ella's special ability was cool. Yet, it was not showcased enough. The story seemed to be more focused on her parents murder then Ella's ability. I would have lied to have had more details and seen Ella use it more. Of course, there is romance between Ella and Alec. Their relationship is fine, not a bunch of sparks flying but at least it did not take over the main storyline.
