Baby Doll by Hollie Overton starts on November 11, 2015 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Lily Riser cannot believe he actually left the door unlocked. She waited a while to make sure he was not coming back. Then Lily grabbed her daughter, Sky and took off. Lily could not wait to get home to her twin sister, Abby. Lily was kidnapped eight years prior when she was a teenager and this is her very first chance to escape. Lily does not want her six-year-old daughter, Sky to be raised a captive. Abby Riser is Lily’s twin sister and she has had a troubled life since her sister disappeared. Abby has made bad choices. No one was left unaffected by the kidnapping. What happens now? Who is the kidnapper and why did he take Lily? Find out the complete story in Baby Doll.

I found Baby Doll to be a slow paced and predictable novel. I had a hard time liking any of the characters (I felt bad for Sky). The book is easy to read, but there is foul language and graphic scenes. I kept hoping for something more (a twist), but the novel plodded along to the expected ending. Abby rebelled in the typical ways, the mother sleeps around, poor Sky is scared and hides (as expected). The story is told from the various character’s point-of-view including the kidnappers. I give Baby Doll 2 out of 5 stars (I did not like it). The story needed a faster pace and scary OMG moments that has the reader enthralled. Instead, I could have cared less what happened to any of them which made it hard to finish this book. The characters come across as juvenile (rebellious teenagers), and the story reminds me of a bad telenovela.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.

A bit unbelievable, but entertaining.

Tough subject, which is oh so important to not only read about, but talk about. Overton is very skilled in her field, and obviously some research was done in the process of writing. However, in her strain to make the story seem believable, Overton kind of made the characters a bit shallow, lacking any depth. I would’ve liked to see more development on the main characters: Eve, Abby, Wes, Rick, and Lily. More about how Lily developed while abducted, how Rick became such a foul being, and so on. Overall, solid read.

2.5 stars. The beginning started out strong, but the second half was not great. The premise was similar to “Room”. I felt compelled to finish mainly to see if the story would be any different from that book.

This was an insane storyline. I was gripped from the beginning of the book till about mid way through. The middle of the novel I become a little bored but the ending picked up quit nicely.
This story is every girl and woman’s worst nightmare. Being held captive. And what is worse, being held captive by someone you know.

The first 3 chapters told the story of Lily being held captive in the here and now. Every chapter after was the aftermath to Lily and her family’s lives. This novel was a whirlwind of emotions for me. This section of the book was the hardest for me to get through. I had a really hard time identifying with Lily’s feelings along with trying to understand and like her sister Abby.

Abby’s character was very impulsive and reckless. For her circumstances in her personal life, I feel like she probably should have taken a step back. To me, she also acted like she was more traumatized than Lily did when Lily finally returned home.

Lily’s character throughout the book really troubled me. Lily had such a calmness to her that it was almost like she believed she deserved what happened to her. Or she was glad it was her and not somebody else. Very odd to me.

But at the end of the novel, it ended perfectly how I would have wanted it to end and is a book I would totally recommend someone to read!

You could say that I devoured this book in a matter of about an hour and a half. I could not stop reading. From the first page to the last page I was in for the long journey. However before I go any further I just want to say that this is nothing like Gone Girl. Ok, back to the book. Lily is a fighter. Yet there was a point when I thought that might not be the case. A big reason for this is her twin sister, Abby. She fought for both of them but at the same time she helped Lily find herself again and start brand new. In a way they healed each other. Abby was broken too after Lily's disappearance but she became stronger in the end as well. I hated Lily's captor. There was no doubt left on the table for the reader to feel anything but repulsive towards him. I will be adding this author to my list to keep reading books from.

Warning as the "f" word is used but in context to portray real emotions that the characters were experiencing.
