Irreal lo muchísimo que me gustó la relación entre Millicent y Lyon.
Ambos personajes se necesitaban mutuamente para sanar adecuadamente, los dos cuentan con un pasado complicado y no se lo merecían. Se complementan tan perfectamente, son hermosos juntos.
Lyon es un personaje que a lo largo de la historia pasó por una gran evolución. Me gustó muchísimo su personaje, gracias a la influencia de su esposa se puede notar que tiene mucha bondad en su corazón, pero viendo su pasado con Emma, se puede ver que la bondad la tenía desde hace muchísimo tiempo y la empleaba de distintas formas. Emma, la difunta esposa de Lyon, fue una persona muy egoísta e insensible, todo por lo que tuvo que pasar Lyon gracias a ella fue detestable e inhumano, la odié muchísimo.
Millicent es una persona que tuvo que pasar por muchas cosas cuando estuvo casada por primera vez. A pesar de todas las desgracias que le ocurrieron, es un personaje muy gentil, tenaz, valiente e inteligente. Su antiguo matrimonio la dejó con daños, pero también le dejó una bendición; Melbury Hall.
Amé muchísimo el personaje de Moisés, creo que fue mi favorito. A pesar de su descripción, su forma de ser me robó el corazón.
El personaje que más deteste fue el de Ned, una persona sin corazón y arrogante. Se merece lo que le sucedió.
Me gustó mucho la estancia de Lyon y Millicent en Baronsford. Ahí pudieron abrir ambos su corazón y también recibieron una gran bendición.
"—¿Crees que va a poder salvar a mi perro, Violet?
—Sí, Moisés, estoy segura de que lo conseguirá.
—Me lo regaló la señora. Solo para mí.
—Lo sé.
—Nunca había tenido nada que fuera mío, Violet.
—Lo sé. Mientras yo viva, también tendrás una amiga, Moisés."
"—Ya me has dicho más de una vez que Melbury Hall es como una familia para mí. ¿Te molesta?
—En lo absoluto. Me considero privilegiado por formar parte de ella."
"—Me sorprende que estés aquí esta noche. Me habían dicho que las habitaciones del señor de la casa estaban en el ala este.
—Te informaron mal. Mis habitación están donde estén las tuyas."

I was a bit put of by the unrealism of the hero's crippled state, but overall this was a fun romantic read :)

Great historical fiction that actually uses appropriate language and imagery. The plot was nice. Even a few twists in there.

1.5 stars- I finished it, but didn't really like any of the characters. Their personalities were inconsistent and neither heroine nor hero treated each other with respect. I'll read the conclusion to the trilogy only because I've read this far, but won't be reading any more of McGoldrick's works, if they are all like these.

The book was decent. I wasn't too sure if I would like this after the first few chapters, only because it seems to be a little too "mushy" for my tastes. I like romance novels, sure, but I also like to read something with substance instead of fluff.
I feel like part of this book is fluff, mostly on Millicent's part - although given the time period I suppose that this was what the authors were trying to convey.
I've noticed that in the book Lyon aka Aytoun aka Lord Aytoun is a very nice round character. He goes from being a crabby, S.O.B. to making a turn around to being a very good husband.
I wish I saw the same in Millicent. She seemed to stay pretty flat, especially in regards to her confidence. Throughout the novel she sees herself as less and that she's not worthy of the great Lord of Scandel.
However, towards the very end I see that she has changed, but only because of outside circumstances. I feel like Jo and that situation changed her drasitcally, and if not for Jo then she would've continued to be a weaker character.
Jasper Hyde was highly annoying throughout the entire book and I find it a bit annoying that we've only gotten a bit of his story on the very last pages of the novel before the Epilogue. You'd think that we'd get some of that thoughout the novel so that we can more fully understand him instead of being bored with his storyline.
Ohenewaa was decent and I loved the way her and the Dowager interacted. Reminded me of my grandmother and grandfather. Great dynamic.
Overall a decent book, the love scenes weren't too steamy if that's something that you're not into. From other books I've read (think Christine Feehan) the sex was all but nonexistent here.
