I was intrigued by Patrick Sherriff’s review and decided to read this, although I knew it was the seventh and last book in a series. I absolutely loved it. It’s a mystery, but a rather quiet one and, for me at least, the mystery plot wasn’t what held my interest. I just love the writing and the gentle octogenarian amateur sleuth, Mas Arai. How delightful to see an 86-year-old as the star character. And he is such a great character, both irascible and lovable. I plan to start at the beginning and read the rest of the series in order.

Lovely protagonist

It’s easy to fall in love with Mas, the grouchy protagonist of Hiroshima Boy. I thoroughly enjoyed the book on its own and might go back to earlier in the series next time I need a nice easy mystery. Loved the setting in Hiroshima and tie-in with Mas’ past.

I'm sad that this book will be the last I read of Mas Arai. Ms. Hirahara wrote these mysteries from the perspective of an outsider that was not as much in opposition to the authorities as he was aware of how irrelevant they are. Goodbye Mas.
