It’s both brutally pessimistic and obscenely optimistic. I’m left desperate for a followup focused on another region, and another followup set 200 years later.

For a book anchored around politics, what harm has been caused by our political systems, and what new systems can exist, this book seemed almost apolitical. It makes the book slightly more approachable to those who are not firmly planted in the global political left. However, because of this it lacks key details regarding how everything came to be in the time period highlighted.

This feels a bit personal, as I've dabbled in imagining realistic futures since 2019 and an oral history is exactly the format I'd have used. The authors simultaneously present an extremely brutal transition and a radical utopia to emerge. Made me think and reflect on pleasant (care work, clubbing) and unpleasant topics (violence) alike.
I'm still fairly skeptical on why dense cities would make sense - and how production is organized, to the point I suspect a lot of the technology described would be deprioritized in a saner society.
In short, one of the best pieces of #climatefiction I ever picked up - and as relevant as ever.

A really encouraging read in these dark times. It was something I didn't know how much I needed, to have a positive vision of the future that in no way elides or minimizes the suffering that will come before it, but that provides hope and imagines the feeling of inevitability for those looking back on how they got to a better time. I liked the conceit of the oral history format, though it did mean that the characters were fleeting and not the center of the narrative. For a story about collectivization, perhaps it is appropriate that there was no main character, and that the plot was about the changing world overall vs. the changing circumstances of any individual. Definitely worth a read, especially now.

At times it felt a bit blunt but a really great novel idea with some banger chapters
