Read this to the 1st graders. They can't wait to check Leroy out for themselves. They also loved that Leroy and Mercy got to meet. Looking forward to book 2.

So fun to see this lighter side of Kate DiCamillo. She has created a series that spins off of the Mercy Watson series with word play and heart.

Leroy sells concessions at the local movie theater but really wants to be a cowboy. And, of course, a cowboy needs a horse. He succeeds in getting - and losing - and finding Maybelline, a horse who thrives on compliments and spaghetti.

The perfect bridge read aloud from picture books to full novels.

I must be honest: I have not read the Mercy Watson books, but luckily it does not matter because Leroy is just so darn loveable. His personality shines through the pages and you just are so happy that Leroy and Maybelline found each other. Also, Kate DiCamillo has a way with voice! I can always hear her characters talking in my head, and they each are so very distinct. I also love her use of vocabulary and humor–perfect! This one is going to be loved by many!

2019 update: We’ve read Mercy Watson now, and it makes this book even better!

I read this to my 6-year-old based on my 9-year-old’s recommendation. One of my goals this year is to read more of the books my kiddos have read as a way to connect with them. The illustrations are lovely, making it a good choice for a first read aloud chapter book or early chapter book for independent readers. Kate DiCamillo intersperses many interesting word choices (cogitate, procure, agitate, rue, and many more). The book has plenty of silliness to appeal to the little munchkins but the plot was a tad on the boring side.

Leroy Ninker works at a drive-in movie theater, but he aspires to be a cowboy. Leroy obtains a finnicky horse named Maybelline. He must remember Maybelline's quirks as he searches for her during a rainstorm.

Leroy Ninker Saddles Up would be appropriate for readers between six and eight years of age. The spaced text and frequent illustrations will help young readers transition from picture books to chapter books. Readers of all ages will enjoy Leroy's humorous antics, which Chris Van Dusen portrays well in illustrations.

This resolution did leave me hanging. I expected Maybelline to cause trouble when she ran off in the storm. After all, her former owner warns Leroy that he will rue and regret the day he leaves Maybelline alone. While Maybelline does get lost, she doesn't cause any trouble. Leroy finds her after a short search. The conflict could use work, but Leroy's aspirations and DiCamillo's humor salvage the poor plot.

Fun children's book. My son enjoyed this book and looked forward to bedtime each night when we would return to this story

Much like the Mercy Watson books it spins off from, this absolutely delighted the two 6-year-olds I read it to.
