Leroy Ninker Saddles Up by Kate DiCamillo

3.0

Leroy Ninker works at a drive-in movie theater, but he aspires to be a cowboy. Leroy obtains a finnicky horse named Maybelline. He must remember Maybelline's quirks as he searches for her during a rainstorm.

Leroy Ninker Saddles Up would be appropriate for readers between six and eight years of age. The spaced text and frequent illustrations will help young readers transition from picture books to chapter books. Readers of all ages will enjoy Leroy's humorous antics, which Chris Van Dusen portrays well in illustrations.

This resolution did leave me hanging. I expected Maybelline to cause trouble when she ran off in the storm. After all, her former owner warns Leroy that he will rue and regret the day he leaves Maybelline alone. While Maybelline does get lost, she doesn't cause any trouble. Leroy finds her after a short search. The conflict could use work, but Leroy's aspirations and DiCamillo's humor salvage the poor plot.
