Wow. This book was so unexpected- pretty much saw it on the library bookshelf in the recommend area and thought I would give it go. Checked the reviews, and everyone only had good things to say, so was really eager to dig in.
Moonbeam is such a beautiful name, and an incredible main character. I knew she was going to be intriguing from the very first pages. I loved how the story went back and fourth between 'Before and 'After, you might think its confusing but its what made the story so great.
Father John is such an awful person, I hated him through out the whole book and Will Hill made sure of that, I think he wrote that character really well. As much as I couldn't stand him, I could understand why almost everyone in the cult trusted him and believed every word that came out of that deceiving mouth. It actually brought me back into the real world, to understand why so many people put their faith into manipulative leaders. Really interesting...
Each conversation she had with two of my other favourite characters Dr Hernandez and Agent Carlyle, felt as I was living the story with her, it angered me many and, I definitely gasped way to many times though the book. Its brutal, tense and intense and I struggled to put it down.
Believe the hype about this incredible book, its worth the read.

Its more like a 4.5 stars. Honestly this book is great! It jumps back and forth between her time at the camp and the time she is out and how she works through her recovery process. Beginning is confusing but eventually makes sense

This is an exceptional piece of modern literature. In a genre I wouldn't have necessary chosen myself, I am delighted to have read Will Hill's novel.
The extremely moving and, at times, graphic depiction of how young people deal with serious trauma is perfectly conveyed through a well used flash-forward/flash-back style. The characterisation is brilliantly done, with a multitude of characters you can feel anger, sadness, dispair and, occasionally, joy towards them.
Father John is terrifying and I can so easily imagine his voice blaring in your head even when he's not around. Although the setting is unlikely to be relatable, the idea of complete controll one person can have over another can easily be (and is) replicated in our real world lives. Plus the fact that this 'inspired' from a real event makes it all the more scarier.
I found it very difficult putting this book down, often reading between 50-100 pages at a time, which is much more than I usually do. Therefore, this is an easy 4.5/5.
