A tribute to the author's son and all the reason her child (and other children) matter.

The illustrations and text are lovely...but I am unsure of the target audience. At first it reads like a lullaby/bedtime story, but moves into social justice/racism (which would lend itself to an older child who wouldn't necessarily want a bedtime story). If you are looking to start a conversation about the unjustness in the world for an older child, read The Talk: Conversations about Race, Love and Truth. For younger children, you can skip some pages to make it the perfect bedtime story.

Give me ALL of the lovely illustrations by [a:Bryan Collier|437910|Bryan Collier|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1466776462p2/437910.jpg]. I especially love that the illustrations in this one is inspired by his grandmother's quilting.

oh my goodness, this was so good.

"And on the day
the universe was created,
you were thought of,
dreamed of,
carried like a
knapsack full of wishes,
as planets,
stars,
moons
took their places...

Making room for you,
your people,
their dreams
your future.

All because,
since the beginning of time...
You mattered.
They mattered.
We matter...
and always will"

I liked that this book encouraged littles that even when the world may look at them like they don’t matter they always matter. I would use this as a read aloud or even as just a book in my library.

There are some books you just have to read to understand the power and profundity of words. After a few pages, I had a hard time reading through all my tears. I’m so glad this book exists.

I absolutely loved this book! I've read it several times, and each time, my eyes water and my heart lifts. It's a love letter to Black boys everywhere, no matter their ages.
