Every time I read Simone de Beauvoir afterwards I feel like a completely different person. She Came to Stay is another fantastic novel, and actually through writing this first novel Simone de Beauvoir found her voice and produced an exceptional body of work.

I read this book in high school, and recently, I decided to give it a second read - oh the regret. I forgot how detestable Xavière was, and I didn’t care much for the other characters. This book is perhaps the reason why I never gave Simone de Beauvoir another chance.
