Disturbing story of the way women were treated and abused under the auspices of religion and the Church in Ireland. Another complete twisting of religion. Easy read. Not tremendously well written. But worth reading to understand how ugly humanity can be in the name of religion.

Another book club read, and definitely one I wouldn’t have picked up myself. Giving it a 5.8/10.
This book has so many slow parts and often is just boring. There’s a lot of repetitive pieces and it gets old. The overall story line is interesting but I feel like it was too anticlimactic and then anything that was interesting or exciting only lasted for a few fleeting moments. There were a lot of concepts based on real history that simply aggravated me - essentially the shaming and control of women based on catholic ideologies, as well as some very frustrating power imbalances. The book is just overall very sad. I did not like the ending.
I will give props for the foreshadowing and themes in the book in relation to characters and outcomes. I also found that the history this book is based on (catholic “laundries”) was fascinating and more interesting than the book itself. Looking forward to discussing with the group tomorrow !
