Okay, I'm embarrassed to say that although I've read some of Hammett's short stories and seen several flickers of his novels on video/dvd, I've never read any of his novels.

Not that this was a Hammett tome, but it did get me to read the Maltese Falcon (listed under Currently Reading...) so that's a plus.

In fact, I think I'm pretty fortunate to have stumbled upon this book before reading MF, since I'm coming to the characters with fresh, unfettered perspective.

Sure, it was hard not to see Bogart as Spade, twitching his cheek and scowling at Efie Perine, but overall, I enjoyed Gores take on the beginnings of a legend.

An attempt to write a film noir. Failed.

This book required a lot more suspension of disbelief than I usually can muster. It's not that the general events were so improbable, it's the omniscience of Sam Spade that got my eyes to rolling. Once I accepted that it would be "that type" of book, the story became really very enjoyable.

Of course, this just made me want to read Dashiell Hammett, but it wasn't a bad pastiche. A little too much conscious street naming as an unnecessary way to try and prove the author knows San Fran. I mean constantly dropping addresses! Fun for me as a new SF transplant, but weird. I just don't think this book is necessary, but I did have fun reading it.

My fedora's off to the author for perfectly capturing the atmosphere of "The Maltese Falcon".

Of course, now I have to read the original again.

It's been awhile since I've read the Maltese Falcon, but I did enjoy this prequel.

Joe Gores has done his home work in this artfully written prequel to "The Maltese Falcon."
