Spade and Archer by Joe Gores

4.0

Okay, I'm embarrassed to say that although I've read some of Hammett's short stories and seen several flickers of his novels on video/dvd, I've never read any of his novels.

Not that this was a Hammett tome, but it did get me to read the Maltese Falcon (listed under Currently Reading...) so that's a plus.

In fact, I think I'm pretty fortunate to have stumbled upon this book before reading MF, since I'm coming to the characters with fresh, unfettered perspective.

Sure, it was hard not to see Bogart as Spade, twitching his cheek and scowling at Efie Perine, but overall, I enjoyed Gores take on the beginnings of a legend.
