I have very mixed feelings about this book, but I finished it because I kept thinking maybe it would get better (it didn’t, really). There were a few GREAT sentences [(what eventually punctured this peaceful blankness was a sudden and massive surge of grief…the grief rammed through me, tearing a jagged, ugly, guttural noise out of my body) (a mood that settled onto my body like medieval armor—a heavy helmet on the brain, a steel girdle constricting the gut) (on my own for the first time in years, loose and adrift, a walking ellipsis)] but most were in the first half of the book. The style of writing was interesting, the convent was interesting, but the execution was not great. There wasn’t that much plot either, I felt like this could have been a really great book but it just turned into the author rambling.

I bought this book because the cover was cute and I thought I'd enjoy a (spooky) ghost love story. But, sadly, I hated it. There were some interesting ideas on encountering the metaphysical, but it wasn't enough to make up for the annoying plot, unlovable / narcassitic characters, and cop-out ending.

I wanted this to be something and then it was nothing like that. My fault for romanticizing the cover? Maybe. The books fault for saying a lot about nothing? Probably also that. Feat. unhealthy relationships, lots of confusing sex, not pushing the creative concept through the plot, unlikeable characters.

The sentence to sentence writing in this is really pretty, but I did not really care for the storyline, such as it was.
