this was cringe. i’m a fangirl and fic writer myself but dear gods this was not that good.

i think it was just too dramatic for my tastes, mostly anyway. marcus’ biggest secrets are being a fic writer and being dyslexic. both main characters had skewed perceptions of themselves bc of their parents being shitty which made sense, considering their ages but jfc. it really made a big deal about nothing.

the fat rep was fine. i think this was more of in the realm of “im fat and thats my whole identity. fuck you.” which cool but most fat people don’t actually think about it like that. then again, most of the fat people i know and am constantly around are also bipoc so we have more issues to focus on other than our size. this story in particular i felt tried to be revolutionary about being fat but instead ended up being “woke” which isn’t a good thing. i’ve also noticed that the author has a running theme of a fat woman main character and a muscular/athletic man love interest. i would like to see 2 fat people as the main couple instead please.

all in all, this just wasn’t for me. honestly, it made me feel a lot like how white queers make my gay fat ass feel. not great and with a bad taste in my mouth.

i’ll give this 3 stars and that’s me being generous.

April and Marcus story is so cute full of ups and downs and tackles issues from fatphobia to toxic relationships with parents. This book was funny and sweet but also so incredibly important with all the representation that it showed and it’s depiction that whether you’re fat or dyslexic, etc you are worthy of love 💕

This is one of those books that you can’t put down yet you don’t want it to end. It had me laughing, almost in tears and it definitely did something to my heart. This is just so pure! And so important! All people regardless of their size are to be loved!
I loved both April and Marcus, their vulnerability, but also their fierce behaviour to set boundaries and to stand up for each other. And also the fanfic storyline is definitely something the younger part of myself can still identify with.
The only thing I didn’t love as much as the rest was the stretched and very public ending; that was simply a bit too much for my taste. Other than that, I loved it!
It’s definitely not the last time that I’ve read this book and I guess I gotta get the paperback as well, since this cover is just stunning!

There is so much to love about this book. A fat-positive romance with characters that have great chemistry. Entertaining and engaging, even it if was a bit predictable.

What I really liked about this book:
  • representation around every corner, especially the leads being, respectively, neurodivergent and plus size
  • nods to the asoiaf fandom, especially the braime shippers
  • beautiful prose that works just as well describing deep emotions as it does fanfiction excerpts
  • writer clearly has mastery of of her craft; i will read more of her work

What I didn't care for:
  • the resolution came to close to the end, not allowing for a proper denoument
  • i didn't find some of the knee-jerk reactions believable when
Marcus told april his online alter ego. at that point, i would think she'd understand and be more forgiving
