May Bird has an incredibly interesting, dark, and complex concept that is executed brilliantly for a children's novel. It tackles the issues of death, the supernatural, balance between light and darkness, and coping with fear and gathering bravery--all of which can be tricky, but even more so for a young mind. The characters are unique and lovable, and the world Jodi Lynn Anderson builds is magnificent.
Mostly I'm not a part of the target demographic.
But the book's pacing felt really slow to me, and I didn't find the characters to be written in a way that I found interesting or felt like I was bonding to them.

I loved this book when I was in junior high and I really enjoyed it again! Perfect to read in the fall / Halloween season. It is a very sweet story about a girl finding her bravery.

Basic fantasy about a lonely girl who goes into the Ever After b/c she read a note that asked for her help. Her House ghost and her cat go along for the trip. Not bad but not great. Seems tame for the age group it is written for.
