Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason by Nancy Pearl

A collection of themed book recommendation lists. I haven't really had the chance, yet, to see how good the recs are, though they seem interesting, and the book makes for a great resource if you're looking to catch up on a genre your background is lacking in. ("Cuban Literature—cool.") Some of the lists are a little too list-like, however (if that makes any sense)—I like to know why a book is being recommended to me, not just its title, and while Pearl sometimes provided nice explanations, she didn't always. Also, whoever copyedited this book deserves a good beating. (They can get in line behind the people who edited [b: The Road|6288|The Road|Cormac McCarthy|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1439197219s/6288.jpg|3355573].) There were all kinds of blunders, including sentences with missing words and—worse—misspelled authors' names. NOT so good for a book of book recommendations! Finally, I wish this book read better as a book. It's really not for reading, but for referring to. Still, it seems like it may turn out to be a handy resource.

some good stuff in here----I like the category system Nancy Pearl has set up. I enjoy reading about books almost as much as I enjoy reading them. easily found 20-30 more books to put on my never ending to-read list

I LOVE to read and am always looking for more suggestions. I've had the pleasure of hearing Nancy Pearl on NPR and in person - she is delightful and a font of information on books and reading. This is a great reference to have, but it's somewhat dry reading. (And I don't always agree with her.)

I'm keeping this one on my reference shelf, in the case that I one day go through ALL of my books on my "to-read" bookcase (yes, I have a whole book case devoted to books I've purchased and have yet to read) and ALL my books to-read on Goodreads. Then, I'll have something to fall back on. Until that day comes, I don't think I'll be jumping to read anything that Ms. Pearl suggests. Not because they aren't good suggestions, they are, it's just that I read this a little late in the game and now I can really justify adding any more books to my never-ending list. A few of her categories are strange and all of the authors she lists as "must-reads" (and must-read everything they've ever written), I've never read, let alone even heard of. Some of her books repeat on lists, which I think is kind of cheating. BUT, I went through and highlighted all the ones I've already read, and I was pleasantly surprised that there are so many novels I have yet to even stumble across (despite wasting all my time and chancing carpal tunnel on Goodreads).

I won't delve into this the moment I need a new book to read, but when the day comes that I am completely out of ideas, I'll know where to turn.

Every reference librarian should have a copy on hand. It's incredibly useful for building displays or recommending books for readers who have more unusual requests or tastes.

Very informative book. I must say I have added some books to my wish list thanks to Mrs. Pearl. I think this is a great reference book for any reader.

I skimmed through this mainly to find more books to add to my list. I have to say I was disappointed that there wasn't more about why she liked some of the books -- in some cases, you were really just reading a glorified list of titles & names. But, I got a lot of titles out of it anyway.

Inspiration

Great for new reading inspiration. I was able to find new book, I would otherwise not think of. Easy sorted by subject.
