A great shared read with a small child! My 5 year old loved this from start to finish. I was concerned that it would be too mature, but the content is spot on really.

It's the first in a series about two boys who enjoy playing pranks at school, the headteacher who tries to stop them, and the plan they come up with to hypnotise him into thinking he's the superhero in one of their homemade comic books...

The pranks, the comics, the fliporama (we looked at these again and again!), the headteacher in his underpants. Just EXACTLY what a young boy wants in a book. We like Dahl, Horrid Henry, Anne Fine, Dick King-Smith, an eclectic mix, and we've now added Dav Pilkey to our bedtime rota.

He's asked for the next in the series already. And I"m happy to oblige - there's a lot of literacy convention here to expose young readers to - comic book structure, flip books, some fantastic humour and silly lines that are actually very witty. The idea of hypnotism and a head teachers swanning around in pants and a curtain is very appealing.

Great for reluctant readers (with lots of short chapters and hilarious illustrations), wonderful for my beginner reader to listen to.

One for ages 5 to 12.

I was surprised by this. I admit I'm the wrong demographic, but for what it is, it's a fun book. I'd give this to young boys who don't enjoy reading in a heartbeat.

This series has inspired so many kids to enjoy reading. (The fact that it has landed on the ALA's Banned Books list also means I had to get a copy.)

I've read about 8 of these books to my son now and he LOVES them. Like, he's totally obsessed. So I have to give them a win for that--they are completely engaging to a five year old boy and contain all the toilet humour you can handle. I do admit that they have some fairly funny and witty moments, but otherwise I can't say that I love them myself. There are no female characters in these books--except one or two evil ones. There isn't much by way of opportunities to talk about being kind or helping others. While captain underpants goes around saving the world, it's really just about getting rid of aliens and monsters and not so much about any of the moral underpinnings of being a super hero or helping people. It's fine for a humorous interlude, but it's not something I'll want to come back to and read again. My son, however, probably has a different opinion!

This book was a lot of silly fun. I wish it had been longer since it barely gets going before it's done, but I suppose that's what sequels are for.

George Beard and Harold Hutchins are the 4th grade pranksters at their school. They change school signs around to say funny things, they fill cheerleader pom poms with black pepper, and they fill footballs with helium. Perhaps their favorite pastime, though, is writing comic books. They steal into the school office and make copies to sell when the secretary's back is turned, then sell their comics to the other kids at the school. Their best superhero is Captain Underpants, who fights with Wedgie Power. "Tra-la-laaa!"

Their mean school principal, Mr. Krupp, really dislikes Harold and George for all the chaos they cause in his school. He blackmails them into behaving, but George and Harold find a way to fight back. Mr. Krupp never knows what hits him.

Oh my goodness. What a fun book! I was giggling away reading this by myself at the age of 33. I would have laughed to the point of tears as a child. But then, I've always loved a good fart joke. Unsophisticated, I know, but farts happen. Might as well get a laugh out of them.

George and Harold are a couple of comic geniuses. They have a talent for getting into trouble but their real talents lie in getting out of trouble. Their imagination and creativity seems to be limitless!

And what they do to Mr. Krupp... I loved it! What kid, no matter how well-behaved, doesn't dream of rebelling against some authority figure? If we're honest, we never lose those dreams. It feels so good to see someone acting out like that, even if it is just in the pages of a book.

There is one chapter that features flip-o-rama. I had such a good time with this! The book has reached a crashing climax and all of a sudden you get to sort of activate it yourself and watch the action take place. It was a lot of fun and I played around with it longer than I should probably admit to. When my husband got home, I made him watch as I flipped the pages to make the illustrations look animated. He even had to chuckle a little and admit that it was "pretty good."

I really, really enjoyed this and recommend it for parents who don't mind the potty humor. For parents struggling to find books for their sons to read, this would be a great one to try.

It is gross. It is disgusting. Which makes it perfect for two small boys! Fart and toilet jokes galore but also little bit of humor adults can appreciate :)
