The Adventures of Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey

3.0

I've read about 8 of these books to my son now and he LOVES them. Like, he's totally obsessed. So I have to give them a win for that--they are completely engaging to a five year old boy and contain all the toilet humour you can handle. I do admit that they have some fairly funny and witty moments, but otherwise I can't say that I love them myself. There are no female characters in these books--except one or two evil ones. There isn't much by way of opportunities to talk about being kind or helping others. While captain underpants goes around saving the world, it's really just about getting rid of aliens and monsters and not so much about any of the moral underpinnings of being a super hero or helping people. It's fine for a humorous interlude, but it's not something I'll want to come back to and read again. My son, however, probably has a different opinion!
