Een beetje (veel) gedateerd en een ietwat flauwe afloop.

I found the audiobook narrator to be hugely distracting and obnoxious, so one star down for that.
Otherwise it was decent but nothing special and I am just very indifferent. Which is too bad I do generally really like Dickens short stories

1: the narration reminds me of Neil Gaiman reading A Christmas Carol as Charles Dickens . Generally this audiobook narrator puts such a variety of inflection, pacing , and breath into his reading that makes it very enjoyable.
2: sweet lovely story.
3: reminiscent of [a:P.G. Wodehouse|7963|P.G. Wodehouse|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1198684105p2/7963.jpg] though this precedes him by a few decades. Overall this far seems more of comedy than spooky ghost stories.
4: a little more ghostly, reminds me of [b:The Mysteries of Udolpho|93134|The Mysteries of Udolpho|Ann Radcliffe|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1624940760l/93134._SY75_.jpg|3253891] with the setting, nuns, knights, and poetry.
Up to this point it’s been confusing where the characters narrating the ghost stories end and when their quoting of the ghosts begins.
5 sailor’s adventure with life and death.
6 a confusing lot of boys’ adventure and exoticism.
7 feels nicely typical of Gaskell (rural vs. urban, mystery, court, spiritual).
8 makes more sense of some of the confusion.

I got on the “Christmas Ghost Story” train and tried this.
Started off interesting and then went super sideways…

The concept was fun, it was interesting to read different Victorian writer's styles and some of the stories were quite good, but some were v boring lol. Also no spoopy??

Overall the book was dry and boring. The only saving graces were Gaskell and Collins.

Like some other readers, I expected this to be a collection of ghost stories and to be frightening. It is neither. Once I realised this I tried to enjoy the stories in their own right but I simply couldn't get on with any of them. They are bizarre and quite unpleasant and the strangely upbeat final chapter felt entirely at odds with the rest to me. I've always struggled with Dickens and this hasn't helped to sway me.

Meh. The only story I liked from this was Wilkie Collins' story about the candlestick. The others were pretty forgettable.
