This book was god awful. None of it made sense at all. Anyone out there writing a novel - keep at it. If this can get published, anything can.

This book was very boring. I don't mind a book with unlikable characters if I felt it was going somewhere but ....picking up this book was a chore, and I ended up giving up. do not recommend.

Read this one back in June and forgot to review it. That does not imply negative feelings. I liked it. Admittedly, there has to be some suspension of belief for the whole premise to work, but that was ok with me in this situation. I really wanted that phoenix to rise from the ashes here, so. Plus the descriptions of characters and place and feeling were vivid. I still see it all clearly playing out, with time passed and more books read, which these days, says something.

There is a review written on the cover of this book that calls it “burnished prose,” and despite still not fully understanding what that’s supposed to mean, it somehow fits.

Sugar Run is a sucker-punch of a novel that will not allow its main cast to be happy. Each character is haunted by their past, reliving the same mistakes they’ve made with new faces in the same old places. While I felt most engaged in the book when we were reading through Jodi’s eyes, I struggled to enjoy any of the others. This is a well-constructed novel, but this took me over a month and a half to finish, and it was required reading for me.

I really wanted to love this book, but it honestly just left me confused. I’m not really sure what I was supposed to gain from reading this. The protagonist is compelling, but the rest of the characters leave something to be desired. Not my favorite work.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book. Heaven knows we need more Appalachia fiction, especially if its queer. I just felt like the main character jumped to emotional places without adequate preamble. Very poetic, not very introspective.

I love the cover.
