Sugar Run by Mesha Maren

3.0

There is a review written on the cover of this book that calls it “burnished prose,” and despite still not fully understanding what that’s supposed to mean, it somehow fits.

Sugar Run is a sucker-punch of a novel that will not allow its main cast to be happy. Each character is haunted by their past, reliving the same mistakes they’ve made with new faces in the same old places. While I felt most engaged in the book when we were reading through Jodi’s eyes, I struggled to enjoy any of the others. This is a well-constructed novel, but this took me over a month and a half to finish, and it was required reading for me.
