This wasn’t bad, but it was ultimately a little disappointing. It’s hard to put my finger on quite why that is, but I just didn’t find it all that engaging. I listened to it on a audiobook, which was a strange experience. Serious Steve Martin reading about funny Steve Martin? I enjoyed it, but it made it a little hard to know what the tone of the book was supposed to be.

This is a memoir mostly about Steve Martin’s standup career, which is something I’m not very familiar with.  It was interesting, but not especially personal (except for stories about his relationship with his parents) and felt mostly like a generic stand up comedians story of growing through the ranks and growing in success.  I’d love to read a memoir that includes a lot more of his film career through all his SNL appearances and, mostly recently, Only Murders.  Maybe someday!

A simple but reflective look at Steve Martin's very slow rise to becoming one of the top comedians and why he eventually retired from standup.

I would’ve liked to hear more about her films as well, it felt like he breezed over a lot of things. More depth would’ve made it a better memoir.
