I read Richard Louv's Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder back in 2018 when our library was constructing a device-free natural play area inspired by Louv's work and I wanted to better understand the research behind our development project. Vitamin N was a wonderful hands-on guide (targeted toward parents or educators) on how to immerse yourself in nature more regularly, a lifestyle that goes against the tide of our device-filled ones. Louv features ideas from parents, teachers, and passionate nature lovers on how they find budget-friendly ways to engage young people in the outdoors, as well as recommendations on how to civically engage to resist moves that look at play as a liability. While I'm not a parent, this book was a huge reminder to me of my fortune in being a free-range child playing outdoors and inspired me to find ways to inject more nature into my day-to-day life. I listened to this book, but I'd recommend reading an electronic or physical copy of it as many of the suggestions are given in list form in the book. Overall, I thought this book was an excellent look at how to form a stronger sense of community through immersion in nature.

Many, many creative ways for families to get outside and get their kids outdoors. Love how he tries to really stress that it's making kids aware of nature that can keep them safe, since sometimes that's what parents fear and why parents tend to shy away from free nature exploration.

A fabulous guide to incorporating more nature into your everyday life. My only complain is that I didn’t enjoy the voices and accents that the narrator did while quoting people.

Love the practical ideas for getting outside. A lot of books talk about the benefits without actually naming anything to do with your kids. There's so many ideas listed in this book.

I loved this! It’s a collection of ideas to help get kids outside; the chapters are themed. I plan to purchase a copy for reference for ideas for my garden club, my students in general, my nieces, and my goddess daughter. I think this is one I might give at baby showers; I usually give a copy of The Read Aloud Handbook, some board books, and diapers. This might need to be added to the mix.

Great book packed with ideas. We spend a decent amount of time outside already and do a lot of the basics (ie lots of walks and park time, gardening, foraging, composting) so wasn’t sure if I’d pick up many new suggestions. But I have a list with dozens of things to try now!
