Who knew staring at a blank, black page could rip the heart out of my chest quite so neatly?

A deep dive in to the early days of the pandemic and BLM movement without feeling "too soon" or preachy. Jason Reynolds is just so incredibly talented. Everything he does is wonderful.

Reynolds and artist Griffin explore recent events in America through a poetic multimedia collaboration told in three breaths. Beautiful, artful, timely and timeless.

This is art and hope and poetry and love and breath. So well executed. Probably one of the best things you can read relating to the pandemic.

First and foremost, the physical book is delicious. It’s strangely heavy and the pages are so glossy. Mmmmm. A textural dream. I just want to run my palms flat against the pages forever and use it as a weighted blanket.

Ugh. And then visually?? Also delicious. So vibrant. I wonder how expensive it was to print this book. I have no idea how that works but I’d give up every penny for those colors. Mmmmmmmmmm.

Oh yeah and the actual book. Like, y’know, the text and the story and all that. Fantastic. This multimodal novel contained so few words and yet said so much. This certainly was a risk, but it was well worth it.

I found this magnificent work in a bookstore, sat down in one of the plush chairs, and finished it in one sitting.

In the hour it took to read (absorb is a better word) Ain't Burned All the Brights reeled me in, bringing tears to my eyes and a feeling of warmth to my chest.

Daunting, yet hopeful. You won't regret reading it.
