Thoroughly enjoyed this relatively quick read. The dialogue & details of 1930s Manhattan was good fun, and captured well, and the characters were well drawn. I’m not sure it’s one I’ll think about again and again through the years, but I enjoyed reading it and it kept my attention.

Amor Towles is such a treasure.

I don't know why it took me so long to read his books. I love the characters and the clever writing. I think this book would speak even more to people who have lived in or are very familiar with NYC.

Next I'll have to read the Novella about Eve in Table for Two, and still have to read A Gentleman in Moscow.

The descriptive writing is amazing! Amor Towles effectively puts the reader smack in the middle of 1938 New York with its jazz clubs and horse races and swanky parties just outside the city. Katey Konstant is an up and coming girl from the not right part of town. She is basically alone in the world and is attempting to make her way. As she makes her way, she mixes with all sorts and she begins to understand what it is that she wants and how she can get it.
This is Amor Towles first effort and it is very good. I’ve heard even better things of his next one. Looking forward to checking out A Gentleman in Moscow!!

Just because you want it to seem like the 1930s doesn’t mean you need to use certain words when talking about race. Also with this writing you can tell in the worst way it’s a man that graduated Yale writing about women
