Enjoyable story. I didn't love how the narrator portrayed Maya's voice, but that's more of a personal pet peeve.

I read this book on the beach in a few hours. Very, very enjoyable. This is the second book I have read by this author and her writing style and the way she uses a theme for the whole book make her one of my favorites. In Esperanza rising the book uses the seasonal vegetables and fruits that the migrant workers are picking at the time as a metaphor for the characters lives. In Paint the wind, she uses the process of learning to ride a horse (walk, jog, lope, gallop) and both the horses and the characters progress through this 4 step growth. Very clever. I also really loved the relationship between the little girl Maya and her teasing cousin Payton how they change over time.

Definitely a young adult book. Fairly easy read. Was a bit slow in the middle as the plot really came in the beginning and the end. Wholesome read overall enjoyed.

I enjoyed this as much as her other stories, it’s incredible how she can pull me into caring about the characters in such a short space of time. I liked the setting of this one too in the plains of Wyoming with the horses and rivers, it felt very immersive and I pictured it well

BEAUTIFUL!
This book captured the beauty of wild horses
but also the struggle they go through to live life

I've had this book sitting in my room since I bought it with a group of friends at a Scholastic book fair in elementary school. I could never get through it when I was younger and always stopped before the 25% mark. Rereading it this past week, I'm still uncomfortable, but for different reasons. I dislike the chapters from the horse's point of view, because they feel so bodily and gross - like the scene at the beginning of Spirit, where his mother is giving birth, and you just stare at the screen feeling awkward, because you're in a room full of people, and they must feel weird about this, too, right?? I also feel strange returning to a genre that my eight-year-old self would have loved but about which my twenty-two-year-old self feels unenthusiastic and more than a little self-conscious. Still, the story isn't bad! I like the human characters a lot, especially how each person has a very unique voice and dialogue style. I was genuinely interested in learning more about the protagonist, and I am satisfied now that I've read the story from cover-to-cover.
