Paint the Wind by Pam Muñoz Ryan

4.0

I read this book on the beach in a few hours. Very, very enjoyable. This is the second book I have read by this author and her writing style and the way she uses a theme for the whole book make her one of my favorites. In Esperanza rising the book uses the seasonal vegetables and fruits that the migrant workers are picking at the time as a metaphor for the characters lives. In Paint the wind, she uses the process of learning to ride a horse (walk, jog, lope, gallop) and both the horses and the characters progress through this 4 step growth. Very clever. I also really loved the relationship between the little girl Maya and her teasing cousin Payton how they change over time.
