I love Maggie O'Dell and I love Ryder Creed. The Creed books give me the best of both worlds! This one did not disappoint, except that it was such a fast read and could have been 200 pages longer and it still wouldn't have been enough. I really do wish that Alex Kava would write more and faster. I mean that as a compliment. :-)

I pretty much read this through without stopping. The fact the plot deals with a possible pandemic really drew me in - I'm into that kind of thing, having written a graduate paper on the 1918 influenza pandemic. I was a little anxious all the way through this book!

With the coronavirus going around at the moment it was a bit scary reading about scientists who purposefully infected people with a strain of bird flu that could infect others easily. Wasn't as much of a focus on the dogs in this story, (apart from whether or not Creed's dogs could get infected if the were trained to detect the virus) but was amazing to see they could train dogs to detect the virus.

I liked it but it kind of felt like half a book in that 95% was kind of set up with nothing of import happening til the last 5% when we get a rushed resolution that wasn't really a resolution at all. Obviously this story arc is continuing over at least 3 books and will be in the next one too but we still could have had a better distribution of the action and and proper resolution without detracting from the ongoing story arc.

Also given this is the 'Ryder Creed' series Ryder doesn't actually stand out as the lead character. Now this is NOT a complaint because the main reason for this is that he seems to share equal page time with Maggie from the Maggie O'Dell series who I love. Indeed if there was less Maggie I would not enjoy the book as much because I would be so busy anticipating the Maggie bits I would be distracted from the story. However, by splitting it we got a good portion of Maggie & a good portion of Ryder. My real complaint (other than the weird unfinished feel and pacing) is that we get them separately for a lot of the book. I want more Maggie & Ryder together - with Grace of course.

My heart was in my throat when
Spoiler fake FBI agent was going to kill all of Ryder's dogs in case they had been exposed. I was all no, no,no I cannot keep reading this series if they do that but then the delightful Hannah saves the day
