The Ministry of Fear by Graham Greene

Feels like an experiment based on a trying out a few clever ideas about memory loss, guilt, limits of knowledge and the like. The description of Blitz-era London is excellent and Greene conveys the sense of fear, horror, and random destruction wonderfully. Could have been about 100 pages shorter. Some of the motivation of characters is a little hard to believe. Based on the original NYT review written when this came out, appearing during the War itself must have added to the book's power.

A bit on the nose at times, but diverting and entertaining. The conclusion is emotionally wrenching but neatly avoids the traditional happy, or sad, ending cliches in favour of something more honest.

Difficult to follow during some parts (I'm not used to this kind of refined language that Greene uses). Strange, enigmatic, interesting plot. Well written. Worth trying out if you don't read this sort of stuff normally. I'll definitely be checking out some of Greene's other works after reading this one.

A slightly uncertain oscillation between spy-thriller/noir and comic farce, but I can't deny that I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Helped of course by Greene's easy and conversational style.
