This is probably my favorite of the Christmas novellas. I've read it in a night and am sad that it ended.

This novella redeems Charlotte's venomous, spiteful, and thoroughly unlikable grandmother. In Half Moon Street we learned her terrible secret of abuse by her late husband which has colored her relationships through the years. Unfortunately, to my memory she does not make an appearance in later books after the metamorphosis she experiences here. I hope that in future books we do see some more of her and how her change of heart affects those around her.

Anne Perry has keen insight into dark psychology, but some times she makes too great leaps in cause and effect. Her sentences and paragraphs are sometimes convoluted and hard to decipher. Luckily this is sporadic, and usually with a few rereadings one can usually follow what she was trying to convey. Now on to the next Christmas story!

Audiobook: this was a good cozy mystery and a little different from Perry’s usual Christmas mysteries. I enjoyed it this season…a bit introspective.

Grandmama gets a mystery! The feisty, and somewhat mean Mariah Ellison spends Christmas with her daughter-in-law and her new husband in the bleak Romney Marshes. She meets a woman who rubs her the wrong way (who doesn't) and soon finds herself solving the unwanted woman's murder. Anne Perry manages to make Grandmama likable in this story and I found the audiobook enjoyable and easy to listen to.

I have wanted to try this author for a while now and decided a Christmas story this time of year would be perfect.  The story was concise and I enjoyed the characters, especially Maude, who only appears for a few pages, and Mariah Ellison, whose perspective we follow throughout and who attempts to solve a crime.  She is grumpy and absolutely delightful.  A quick read with a lot of great writing.

Another of the annual Anne Perry Christmas story. I read two of them this weekend and I think that my sugar level is now sufficently high that I can save the rest for another year. A nice story, no need to engage brain, the book flows along with minimal attention needed from the reader. But, hey, it's the holidays and we all need a Christmas story to launch the season.
