Six Four

3 1/2 stars really but I defaulted lower because this novel is just toooo long! The length did contribute to a nice character study of the protagonist, the media head of a Japanese police district but the plodding, methodical approach to the case and office politics became tedious quite often. The ending became exciting and intriguing which did make up for the tedium somewhat.

I really enjoyed the politics in this, both between different police divisions and the press. An interesting window into Japanese working culture, as well as how women fare in the working world there.

Thoroughly interesting, occasionally gets a little lost in the inner-workings of the department weeds where the plot loses some forward momentum. Quite a good meditation on the grief parents feel when a child goes missing or is presumed dead. My problem as a reader is that I want every novel that takes place in Japan to feature some bizarre, possibly supernatural plot twist that Murakmi might invoke and Six Four is decidedly a procedural mystery. The resolution, however, is satisfying and the prose is adequate to the level of detail as the plot unfolds. Overall I would recommend this to fans of mystery and at novel's end I find myself as a reader wishing that more of Yokoyama's novels had been translated into English as I find myself interested enough to want to return to this writer's fictional worlds.

I give this book a 2.5/5 for various reasons.
The world building was great; I felt like I was by Mikamis side the whole way. Mikami is a great detective and I was thoroughly surprised by the plot twist toward the end of the book.

I felt like the story dragged out. The build up was too slow for my liking and there was more police politics than I’ve anticipated.

I also felt like there were some plot holes to the story. I wanted to know where his daughter was? I wish we were given more information on them trying to find their daughter. She was on my mind a lot and I’m disappointed that nothing came out of it and that it stayed as a ‘let her be and she’ll come to us when she’s ready’ concept. I honestly thought the kidnapping towards the end was going to be his daughter but I was pleasantly surprised it was the kidnapper from Six Four. Also where did Futawatari get the Koda memo from? Mikami mentions it in the last chapter but I really wanted to know his role in it all. I thought he wouldve had a bigger role in the recent kidnapping case. I guess we’re supposed to stay in the dark about it.
