The bureaucracy of the police force is an odd subject for a 'crime phenomenon', and by the end I was pretty exhausted by it.
The premise was intriguing: hero works in the police media department, handling the press. His daughter is missing and it could be tied up with a 15-year-old case of abduction, murder and blackmail known in the force as Six Four, the name marking the case as occurring in the final year of the previous emperor. Okay, sounds interesting....
And occasionally there is some interesting Japanese social commentary, but overall I was thoroughly bored. Perhaps that's partly the point - that normal detective investigations aren't all adrenaline and shoot outs. But surely in place of the conventional action and excitement there should be something else to hold the reader's attention? For me, there just wasn't.

Ok. Ich gebe auf... noch 400 Seiten wie Mikami zu Direktion XY fährt, um mit Person Z zu sprechen und ich schlage mir an diesem Wälzer den Kopf ein.
Aber was habe ich gesucht: japanische Kultur im Thrillerformat. Und was habe ich bekommen: japanische Kultur in nicht endend wollender narrativer Wiederholung, die nicht nur die Spannung, sondern auch die Lesefreude raubt. Zwar erfährt man Unmengen an Insights über die hierarchischen Strukturen der japanischen Polizei, aber ungefähr so spannend erzählt wie ein Handbuch zu ebenjener.
Außerdem fand ich den Male Point of View teilweise kaum auszuhalten. Wie Frauen hier betrachtet und bewertet werden: yikes.
Schade, ich hatte mich gefreut auf diesen gehypten Roman, muss ihn nun aber nach entsetzlich lang erscheinenden 300 Seiten wegpacken. Das Leben ist zu kurz für Polizei-Handbücher.
