This book.. AHHH it was so good and such a refreshing read! I loved how the villain in this story was actually a villain, no sob story, he wasn’t good looking, he was evil. My only critic about this book is that I wish there were more Ursula chapters!

Oh man I have a lot to say about this book. After finishing it, I’m really so-so about it. The premise is amazing. A conglomoration of re-written fairy tales, a kingdom torn in two, shapeshifters and magic. But the actuality was dark, really, really dark. I was very surprised because it was supposed to be YA, but it really didn’t read like it. The villain is downright evil. Not morally grey. Not “oh he’s bad but we love him anyways”. Downright evil. It’s actually really hard to read the chapters in his POV. This book had some good lines, the writing is descriptive and the characters are mostly pretty well rounded out. But I think there was just too much going on for it to be such a short book. Overall, I’m glad I didn’t stop in the middle because the ending helped it somewhat, If I had stopped where I wanted to stop it would have been a one star.

I wanted to like this more than I did.
The writing style and the content didnt quite align in my mind. It was definitely unique, and I loved the stories woven together. But the narration style felt a little young, compared to the intense, sometimes graphic, content that was being told.

Love how this weaves strands of traditional fairytales into a thoroughly modern contemplation of gender roles, power, duty, and the role of storytellers. Plus, were-bears!

We know so many classic fairytales, but what if the teller had changed them as time went? What if the truth was a bit different, the golden straw was made by the queen's sister, the princess turned into a bear, and Little Red loved her wolf? An interesting take on traditional tales that managed to be unique even surrounding by so many other retellings.

The concept of this book was very interesting, it was like fairy tales within a fairy tale. While I enjoyed the writing style, there were some unnecessary graphic details. The story was hard to follow at times because it jumped around from character to character. The cover art definitely drew me in. Overall, average, 3 stars.
