Rafe Wolfford grew up being trained to become a soldier and a spy, both things he does incredibly well with no plans to stop. But when his uncle is wounded while on the hunt for a traitor who's selling military info to the French, Rafe returns to London as the viscount’s heir in search of a wife. It's something he'd have to do eventually while also giving him an excuse to court Lady Verity in order to get closer to her family and find the traitor. He thought he could do it easily and not fall for Lady Verity, but Verity is a force unto herself and things around her never go according to plan.
It's a nice twist on a historical romance where most of the focus is on the hero while still giving the heroine a lot of agency and power. I really enjoyed that because it showcases both sides as equally important in the relationship that slowly develops between Rafe and Verity.
The mystery isn't as developed as I would have liked and there's one big plot thread that never really gets resolved or explained, but there's enough there to push the leads together and drive the urgency of the relationship so I'm forgiving that.
Overall, it's a quick, sweet read with a nice dash of danger and excitement to spice things up.
Delighted thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the wonderful romance read!

I somehow knew this story would get to me more than the others, the build-up of anticipation was the perfect appetizer leading to this delicious main course. The beautiful banter between Verity and Rafe was a sumptuous ambrosia. I love a teasing- taunting kind of love and the humour in the relationship is what makes them such a delight. Once we move past the mystery of Verity’s phantom, we are thrown directly into the Rafe’s mystery case. That mystery arch may have been one of the most well-written bombshell’s I’ve read. I can honestly say I didn’t see it coming, which is always a pleasant surprise. I was enthralled with this story from start to finish.

I received and ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Two things about me. I love a good romance novel. I hate to disparage an author's work.
That said. I did not enjoy this book. I would have given up on it if it hadn't been an ARC. I didn't care about he characters, and found a whole lot of the things they did to be idiotic. Add to that an off the charts cheese-level and I am out. I am sure there will be readers for this book. But I am, sadly, not one of them

Sabrina Jeffries is my favorite author working in historical romance, and this book is a good example of why. I love how good the chemistry was between the leads and the mystery of the spy was thrilling with an ending I didn't see coming! Thank you netgalley for the copy

I recently delved into this delightful escape into a Regency romance with a twist. The story of Lady Verity and Rafe Wolfford is not your average historical romance; it's intertwined with elements of espionage and intrigue. Lady Verity's involvement in a pioneering party planning business and Rafe's hidden agenda as a spy makes for a captivating plot. Their reluctant partnership, fueled by necessity and shadowed by secrets, evolves into a genuine, unexpected, and heartwarming connection. Beverley A. Crick's narration brought the characters to life with her splendid vocal performance, adding depth and emotion to the story. This audiobook was a wonderful blend of mystery, romance, and historical charm.
