While the illustrations for this book were gorgeous, I don't feel like I learned anything about Florence Mills. The most I know about her is that she sang and danced and did it to try and promote little known people of color who were trying to break through on the stage. This book lacked detail. While it's a children's book, there is a way to make kid's non-fiction more informative than this.

Another excellent biographical picture book. I really enjoyed reading about Florence Mills and I know my fifth graders would too.

Beautiful, sad story of a person I had never heard of. My favorite kind of biography.

Short and charming children's biography of the jazz age performer and humanitarian Florence Mills. Renee Watson and Christian Robinson have done a terrific job of capturing the joyful and kind performer. After finishing the book I was immediately eager to find out more about her short yet significant life.

Simple straightforward children's picture book biography of someone who was not familiar with. The art wasn't a style I appreciate, but it was fine and not distracting. But the text was really good. Very readable but also with the right tone. It told a somewhat harsh but uplifting story. It clearly pulled punches but told enough truth to get the flavor of what world was like then.

Beautifully told and illustrated picture book biography about one of not so well known jazz & blues singers of the early 1900s. My daughter, who is 8 and in the second grade, read it on her own and enjoyed it. It touches on the racism of that time, and stresses the importance of standing your ground in the face of indignity. Children who like this book, might enjoy the picture book When Grandmama Sings by Margaree King Mitchell

Story about Florence Mills, famous performer who performed at the start of the 1900s. She was well known for her singing and dancing ability.

This picture book biography of black performer Florence Mills is illustrated with colorful, cut-paper spreads and covers the entirety of Mills's career. It's a nice compliment to the other picture book biography of Mills published this year (BABY FLO), which concentrates on her childhood. Use them both together for a complete picture of this little known (even though she was very famous in her time!) woman who helped to pave the way for many black performers.
