Aside from the fact that I trudged through the first 100 pages, this book was really very good. I know very little about the Civil War, so I enjoyed reading an account that was heavily researched but engaging. Not something I'd read twice (a small list to be sure, anyhow), but I'm glad I picked this title for a book discussion.

The last quarter of this book took it from a 4 star read to a 5 star read for me. The story was interesting and the perspectives enlightening. There was thought-provoking commentary on ego, and sacrifice, and the cost of our choices. Brooks is an eloquent writer and her observations on human nature are brilliant.
A well-imagined story behind the Little Women. What was it like for Mr. March away from his family and facing the war? The book adds a lot of depth to the family, in a good way. I enjoyed it. I would have liked a little more from it though, I think.
Especially enjoyable for those of us who loved Little Women and Alcott's other books. A novel based on the father, Mr. March, who is away serving as a chaplain during the Civil War. Well written and often immensely sad with war as the backdrop.

Very interesting retelling of Mr. March’s story. The past and present nature of the storytelling was sometimes difficult to keep up with, especially in audio. There was too much palavering towards the end of the book. It could’ve been an hour shorter.
