March

I found the main character of Mr. March to become increasingly irritating as the book progressed. He was repetitive and didn't really grow at all. In general, I think modern spin-offs of classics rarely go well, and admittedly, the Civil War is far from my favorite era for historical fiction. I'm planning to attend a book discussion at the library next week, which is what prompted me to read this book. I'll be interested to hear other views.

Disappointing white-man bullshit. I had higher hopes.

My wife urged this one on me. I have not read Little Women and I am not a Civil War buff, but I don't think it mattered--this book did not require it. Good story, great description of DC during the war. The concept of a new fictional character related to a well known existing character is interesting.

As a fan of Little Women, I was curious to see how Brooks would render the mostly absent father’s voice. There are bits of this book that are lovely, and I appreciate the fictionalized accounts of how freed people attempted to make their way against the odds. I did skim a chapter or two when the character of March got on my nerves for his overblown sense of self, but he isn’t supposed to be a wholly likable character after all.

Lovely prose, interesting fold-in with history and classic fiction.

Well written and thought out. I made the mistake of reading right before bed one night. On one hand, the book hypothetically answered some questions I had from little women (how did the March family loose their wealth). On the other, I liked Little Women better.
